HiRes Video Innovations

MOBOTIX AG sees itself as a software company with in-house hardware development in the area of digital, high-resolution and network-based video security solutions. The company focuses on the development of user-friendly complete system solutions from a single source. The publicly-traded company with headquarters in Langmeil, Germany, is known as the leading pioneer in network camera technology since its founding in 1999 and its decentralized concept has also made high-resolution video systems cost-efficient. From 2010 onwards, MOBOTIX will extend its product range to include intelligent home automation products that are developed in-house. Whether in embassies, airports, railway stations, ports, gas stations, hotels or highways, hundreds of thousands of MOBOTIX video systems have been in operation on every continent for years.

Results Of IMS Research Study

According to a study conducted by the market research institute IMS Research, MOBOTIX has quickly managed to become the fourth largest company in terms of its international market share. In the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa), MOBOTIX was able to increase its market share by 3.8 percent in 2009. MOBOTIX now has the second largest market share in this region. In North and South America, the company is one of the top ten providers of network cameras in terms of sales. In the megapixel camera market, MOBOTIX has the world's largest market share with nearly 40 percent..

Why High-Resolution Systems?

The higher the resolution, the more accurate the detail in the image. With the old analog video surveillance technology, a live image has no more than 0.4 megapixels, and a recorded image generally has 0.1 megapixels (CIF format). In comparison, one MOBOTIX camera with 3.1 megapixels records around 30 times more detail. This means that greater image areas, including 360° panoramas, are possible, while reducing the number of cameras, and thereby also the costs. For example, four lanes of a gas station can be recorded with one single MOBOTIX camera, instead of the four conventional cameras normally necessary for such a task.

Disadvantages Of The Old Centralized Solution

Usually cameras only supply images, while processing and recording take place later on a central PC using video management software. Contrary to the high-resolution video systems, this traditional centralized structure has many limitations, since it requires high network bandwidth and the PC processing power is insufficient when using several cameras. An HDTV-MPEG4 film already places heavy load on a PC, so how can it be expected to keep up with a dozen high-resolution live cameras? Due to the high number of PCs required for these systems, traditional centralized systems are therefore becoming less and less suitable or cost-effective.

The Decentralized MOBOTIX Concept

As part of the decentralized system architecture developed by MOBOTIX, the images are no longer analyzed on a central PC, but in the cameras themselves. They independently detect movement in the image, save the images in a database and inform about the event via e-mail or VoIP telephone call. This decentralized structure relieves both the network and the central video management system, enables higher frame rates and significantly reduces the number of storage systems required when recording high-resolution video sequences.

The Benefits

MOBOTIX video solutions therefore require significantly:

- fewer cameras thanks to more accurate detail in wider view images with megapixel technology

- fewer PCs/DVRs, because around 40 high-resolution video streams with sound can be saved to a single PC, or may not require a PC at all if recording to cameras using digital storage (USB, SD card)

- lower network bandwidth, because everything is processed in the camera itself and the high-resolution images therefore do not have to be constantly transferred for analysis

Robust And Low Maintenance

MOBOTIX cameras have no mechanical motors for lenses or for movement. Without any moving parts, they are therefore so robust that maintenance is reduced to a minimum. The unique temperature range from -30° to +60°C (-22°F to +140°F) is achieved without heating or fan at approximately 3 watts. Since no PC hard drive is necessary for recording, there are no parts that wear out in the entire video system.

Software Included

There are no software or licensing costs with MOBOTIX because the software is always supplied with the camera for an unlimited number of cameras and users. The supplied software package also includes professional control center software, as used in soccer stadiums, for example. Updates are available free of charge on the website. The system price for a weatherproofed camera including the lens, query software and day-by-day recording to an SD card is under EUR 1,000.

Standardized Network Technology

The cameras are connected and supplied with power using a normal computer network and not via a video cable. This enables access to the cameras from anywhere in the world via glass, copper or via a wireless connection using affordable standard IT components.
