Following his military service, Hans-Peter Karpenstein (born in 1962) studied Business Administration at the Philipps University of Marburg and the University of Cologne, where he received his diploma in 1989. From September 1989 until March 1995, Hans-Peter Karpenstein worked as a Management Consultant for KPMG Unternehmensberatung GmbH, Düsseldorf, in the areas of Finance, Strategy and IT. From April 1995 until December 1999, he worked for the Volkswagen Group as head of Controlling/Purchasing for VW-gedas GmbH and as Commercial Manager for gedas telematics GmbH, where he was responsible for Finance, Purchasing, IT, Personnel and Customer Service. In January 2000, Hans-Peter Karpenstein left to become a member of management of teracom GmbH, Berlin.
Hans-Peter Karpenstein has been working for the SCHOTT Group since August 2003. From 2003 until 2005, he was the Managing Director of SCHOTT Electronics GmbH and CFO of the Business Unit Electronic Packaging. At the end of 2005, he was named Managing Director of SCHOTT Displayglas GmbH and, at the same time, CFO of the Display Glass Business Unit. From 2008 until 2009, Hans-Peter Karpenstein was responsible for the group’s Asian business as President & CEO SCHOTT Asia located in Shanghai and Singapore. He was appointed a member of the Board of Management of SCHOTT Solar AG in January 2010 and is responsible for the areas Finance and Controlling.
